GUWAHATI, Jan 30: Videos showing a university professor in West Bengal getting ‘married’ to her student, that too inside the classroom, has taken the internet by storm forcing authorities to initiate a probe into the incident while sending the professor, identified as Payal Banerjee, on leave pending a probe.
The student has also been asked not to join classes till the probe ends.
Reports said the incident took place at the Psychology Department of Nadia’s Haringhata Technology College, about 150 kms from West Bengal capital Kolkata.
Videos showed the professor, wearing a bridal outfit, and a first-year student performing various rituals of a traditional Bengali Hindu wedding, including ‘sindoor daan’ (applying vermillion) and exchange of garlands inside the classroom.
Meanwhile, the professor, in her defence, stated that the event was part of a psycho-drama demonstration and not part of a real wedding. She further said the videos were meant for internal use but were “leaked” without her knowledge and consent to “malign her and her department’s image”.
