GUWAHATI, March 31: A woman died after an LPG cylinder explosion sparked a fire inside a three-storeyed building in Guwahati’s Beltola locality today (March 31).

The deceased has been identified as Pranati Deka, a resident of Basisthapur By-lane 1, in Wireless, Beltola.

The woman was alone inside her house when the fire broke out after a cylinder explosion.

While her husband, a doctor by profession, had gone to Nagaon where he reportedly had a chamber, his son, an engineer employed with Oil India Limited, lived in Duliajan with his family.

She also had two daughters, neighbours said, who were married off: the eldest one lives in New Delhi while the younger daughter was a resident of Hatigaon.

Neighbours said they heard a loud sound at around 2:30 pm today and realised to their horror and dismay that a fire had broken out and saw smoke bellowing out from the windows while flames engulfed the interiors.

Neighbours informed the fire department and although fire tenders came in quick time, and succeeded in dousing the flames, the woman was found dead, possibly due to asphyxiation as a result of choking.

“I heard a loud sound and realised that Deka Baideu’s house was on fire. We called the fire brigade and, in the meantime till they arrived, tried our best to extinguish the blaze by throwing water from our houses. Fire tenders tried their best and extinguished the flames but sadly she was found dead,” a neighbour told News Live, adding that two LPG cylinders exploded leading to the blaze.

Police later transported the body to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for a post-mortem.
