With new eye bank, Cornea transplant becomes reality at GMCH

GUWAHATI: Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated an eye bank at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Friday.

“This is one of the first government eye banks in the entire North-East. We will be able to do Cornea transplantation here. This is a very big achievement,” said GMCH superintendent Dr. Abhijit Sarma.

The GMCH authorities have already opened a help desk for the State Eye Bank. The helpdesk can be reached at 8822380763 and 8822377199.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also inaugurated the super specialty hospital at the GMCH.

The Health Minister Tweeted, “The Eye Bank inaugurated today at GMCH is a boon not only for #Assam but for #NorthEast as a whole. The GoA in collaboration with Tata Trust, Hans Foundation & LVPEI has taken a novel step towards eye care in the region.”

In his speech, minister Sarma dwelt on developmental plans for the GMCH as well as the health sector of Assam.

“We have all witnessed the phenomenal growth of the GMCH in the last 14 years. It is not only from the infrastructure, but also in the service or patient care, the GMCH has achieved a lot,” said Dr. Sarma.

He also lauded the efforts and service of the GMCH staff in fighting COVID-19.
