UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is back at the saddle, after having chosen interim Congress president by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) which met on Saturday. The decision, Congress sources said, fell on Sonia Gandhi’s shoulders after no agreement was achieved on the names of Mallikarjun Kharge, Mukul Wasnik and Jyotiraditya Scindia following their proposal at sub-group discussions.
Sonia, it is learnt, was initially unwilling to accept the request to lead the party but she “finally agreed”.
The name of party general secretary and eastern Uttar Pradesh in-charge Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also cropped up during discussions, sources further said.
Meanwhile, the Congress making Sonia interim president has not gone down very well among many commoners with social media users taking the decision with a pinch of salt.
Many feel the Congress missed a big opportunity to make a non-Gandhi president of the party, particularly considering the growing perception among the people of the Congress being a family entity of the Gandhi-Nehru party.
