Popular messaging app WhatsApp has announced that it will limit forwarding of messages to five chats in India amid incidents of mob lynching that were fuelled by rumours spread through the social media, including the popular messaging application.
The Facebook-owned app will also delete the quick forward button placed next to media messages.
“We believe that these changes – which we’ll continue to evaluate – will help keep WhatsApp the way it was designed to be: a private messaging app,” WhatsApp said in a statement, and added: “We are deeply committed to your safety and privacy which is why WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, and we’ll continue to improve our app with features like this one”.
The central government had shot off another letter to the company asking it to introduce stringent steps to curb the menace of fake news in the country.
