Weekend lockdown to continue in Sonitpur district to arrest spike in COVID cases

GUWAHATI, July 31: The district administration of Sonitpur will continue with the weekend lockdown along with all other districts of Assam in a bid to stem rising COVID19 positive cases.

As the COVID19 scenario in Sonitpur district seems to be spiraling out of contro, the district administration has decided to continue with the weekend lockdown in the district. An official order for weekend lockdown for the next two weeks has already been issued by the deputy commissioner.

A complete lockdown will be in force in the district from 7pm on July 31 to 7 am of Aug 3 in the first phase while the next weekend lockdown will be imposed from Aug 7 evening till 7am on Aug 10.

Despite the MHA guidelines for Unlock 3, weekend lockdown will continue to remain in place in all districts of Assam including Sonitpur. Only pharmacies, hospitals and other exempted categories will be allowed to operate in the district.

Earlier the district magistrate had barred inter district movement of individuals from July 22 in view of the increasing number of cases.

The total tally in the district stands at 1208, of which 128 tested positive yesterday.

During the lockdown period, people have been asked to follow all guidelines, while police will keep an eye on the violaters.
