Voting underway in first phase of Assam Panchayat elections

The Panchayat elections in Assam are being held in two phases and results will be declared on May 11

Voting in the first phase of Panchayat elections in 14 districts of Assam is underway with the exercise beginning at 7:30 am today (May 2) and will continue till 4:30 in the evening.

The rural hustings in the first phase are being held in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhumi.

Voting has been peaceful so far as enthusiastic voters are queuing in front of polling booths since early morning hours to exercise their francise.

The voting exercise is being carried out using ballot papers and not EVMs.

As per local sources, an estimated 18.24% of the electorate had exercised their franchise till 10:30 am although an official figure from the State election commission is awaited.

The panchayat elections are being seen as the semi-finals ahead of the 2026 assembly polls in Assam and is being seen as a massive test for the fractured Opposition to put up a good show although the ruling BJP-AGP-UPPL alliance looks set to sweep the hustings with the BJP and the AGP having already won 348 GP seats uncontested.

A total of 639 candidates are contesting for the posts of zila parishad members while 2,608 candidates are in the fray for anchalik panchayat members.

Polling is taking place in 216 zilla parishad constituencies, 94 anchalik panchayat
constituencies and 1,139 gaon panchayat constituencies.

The number of polling stations for the first phase is 12,916.

Over 89.60 lakh voters are eligible to vote in the first phase election.

While the second phase will take place on May 7, counting of votes will take place on May 11.
