GUWAHATI: The second phase of voting for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections is going on in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts in Assam with heavy security arrangements and COVID-19 protocols.

There are total 19 constituencies in the second phase.

Kokrajhar and Chirang have 12 and 7 seats respectively.

In Kokrajhar, over 6.5 lakh voters will decide the fate of 77 candidates that are in the fray in 12 seats. In Chirang district, 34 candidates are contesting in the 7 seats where the electorate strength is over 3.68 lakh.

The first phase of the polls in Udalguri and Baksa districts saw a polling percentage of 77.

The votes will be counted on December 12.

Long queues have been seen in many places as voters started to reach the polling booths to exercise their franchise since morning. Assam tourism minister Chandan Brahma was seen casting his vote at a polling booth in Chirang district.

So far, no untoward incident has been reported in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

However, on Wednesday evening, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) president Pramod Boro’s convoy was attacked by miscreants at Noyagaon in Kokrajhar district.

Fearing a disastrous defeat in the hands of UPPL, BPF goons are now resorting to violence. It is a shame and a heinous act of crime. UPPL party condemns such acts of violence. Such heinous act and violence can not deter the people from Parivartan.

We appeal people of Kokrajhar and Chirang Dist to come out in large numbers and vote tomorrow without any fear. People must answer Bullet through Ballot.
We stand with the people of BTR,” Boro wrote on his official Facebook page.
On the other hand Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) president Hagrama Mohilary has condemned the attack on the UPPL president.
“I condemn the attack made on UPPL president Mr. Pramod Boro and hope that no untoward incident takes place before the election.
I and my party is committed towards a safe and peaceful election,” Mohilary wrote on Facebook.
