GUWAHATI, March 2: Four out of the 50 workers rescued from the avalanche-hit BRO camp near Badrinath in Uttarakhand have died while the rest are being treated at an Army hospital, reports stated.
Meanwhile, operations are underway to rescue the five workers who are believed to be trapped under the snow.
While the critically injured workers are being airlifted to Joshimath by army helicopters, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is preparing to deploy the Drone-Based Intelligent Buried Object Detection System (DIBODS) to further expedite rescue efforts.
“DIBODS will be airlifted by the Indian Air Force for deployment in search and rescue operations in the Mana area of Chamoli. The system would be airlifted to Dehradun, from where it will be taken to the Mana area in helicopters,” news agency ANI quoted Air Force officials as saying.
Fifty-five workers engaged in clearing snow to facilitate army movement at Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district were trapped at a BRO camp following the avalanche on Friday morning.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is constantly monitoring the rescue operation while Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called him up and assured him that the central government will provide all possible assistance to deal with any emergency.
