GUWAHATI, Dec 2: US President Joe Biden on Sunday pardoned his son Hunter, who had been convicted on charges related to gun crimes and tax violations.
Biden took a U-turn on his past promises not to use his powers for the benefit of his family members.
Biden said his son was “selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted” and that he had kept his word of not interfering with the Justice Department’s decision-making process.
“Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,” he said in a statement released by the White House.
Hunter Biden, it may be mentioned, is a recovering drug addict who had become a target of Republicans, including US President-elect Donald Trump.
Trump, meanwhile, called Biden’s decision to pardon his son a “miscarriage of justice”.
“Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!” Trump said in a post on American social media platform Truth Social.
