GUWAHATI, Jan 13: People of Assam and Assamese around the world are in a festive mood as they get ready for Magh or Bhogali Bihu and tonight’s Uruka feast in particular.
Markets have taken the entire spotlight ahead of Uruka as people made a beeline, particularly to the fish markets, since early morning to get everything they would need for a hearty feast.
Fish markets across Assam are stealing the show once again with giant fishes kept ready for people to buy.
Despite prices a tad higher than normal days, people were seen making good purchases and are in no mood to compromise.
The fish market on the Brahmaputra river bank at Uzan Bazaar in Guwahati has always been the centre of all attraction for the sheer number of people thronging it for their fish purchases for Uruka. This year, too, the scenes were no different as hundreds of people were seen making a beeline to the market, some coming as early as 4 am, to take home their favourite fish.
“I came to get fish for tonight’s Uruka. I come to Uzan Bazaar every year. It has become sort of a ritual for me to buy fish for Uruka here. I have bought a sitol and a rou,” Tushar Chakraborty, who stays in Chandmari, said.

Meanwhile, markets are also getting flooded with various Bihu delicacies, including pitha, laru, sira, doi and other delicacies.
Mejis are also being readied which will be lit tomorrow morning as people will take a bow before the fire God and pray for past year’s good harvest and for peace and amity to prevail in the State in particular and across the world in general.
Meanwhile, bhelaghars built on various themes are also stealing the limelight. From giant aeroplanes to the Ahom ampitheatre Ranghar, there has been an undeclared competition among people in rural and semi-urban pockets to create eye-catching structures using straw and bamboo.
As the festive mood prevails across the length and breadth of the State, News Live also wishes everyone a festive Bhogali Bihu.
