Uruka: Markets chock-a-block with people, giant fishes centre of all attraction

GUWAHATI: Assam is all set to celebrate Bhogali Bihu with gusto and enthusiasm with people getting ready for community feast on Uruka tonight.

People have been making a beeline to fish markets from early morning hours to grab the best deal. Giant fishes of different varieties are the centre of attractions in various markets across the state.

A Fish weighing as high as 45 kilograms was sold at a Lakhimpur market.

The fish market at Uzan Bazaar ghat in Guwahati was abuzz with people even before dawn. Fishes weighing 28-30 kilograms hogged limelight at Uzanbazar fish market.

“We have a ‘Silgharia’ fish weighing 27 KGs which will be sold at Rs. 1200 per KG,” said a fish seller.

Fish sellers came from in and around Guwahati and from places as far as Nalbari, Mangaldai and Nagaon.

Buyers from different parts of Guwahati started to throng the market as early as 2-3 AM.

“I have purchased some local fishes. I am amazed to see different varieties of fishes here,” said a buyer.

Markets across the state were also thronged with buyers bargaining for the different varieties of fish.

On the other hand, community fishing events are being held in different parts of Assam amid Bhogali fervour.
