A day after the office of the Registrar General of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs, through a gazette notification, directed the Assam Government to publish the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) on or before Dec 31, Prateek Hajela, State co-ordinator of the NRC update process, today (July 31) told Supreme Court that no deadline has been fixed and that the deadline fixed by the office of the RGI is for budgetary purposes.
“… the Registrar General of Citizen Registration, hereby, notifies that the enumeration in connection with the updation of the National Register of Citizens, 1951, in respect of the State of Assam shall be completed within the period ending on the 31st day of December, 2018,” the gazette notification issued by the office of the RGI had earlier stated.
Hajela also stated that deadline, if any, can only be fixed by court.
