Under fire over wife’s alleged ISI links, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi admits to meeting Pak Envoy in 2015, dodges other serious issues

GUWAHATI, Feb 16: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who is under the scanner over his British wife Elizabeth Colburn’s alleged links with Pakistan’s ISI amid a volley of questions raised by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in the past couple of days, today admitted to have met then Pakistan’s envoy to India Abdul Basit in 2015 but dodged other crucial posers raised by journalists today.

After the Assam Chief Minister raised the issue of Elizabeth Colburn’s alleged ISI links, Congress MP Gogoi had, while trying to trivialise the issue, said that if his wife is an ISI agent then he is a RAW agent.

“If my wife is an ISI agent then I’m a RAW agent,” the Jorhat Lok Sabha MP had said.

The Congress leader’s meek rebuttal did not go down well with Chief Minister Dr Sarma who said that the issue is a serious one and something which is related to the country’s security and hence Gaurav Gogoi should answer all questions that have now come up.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma also said that the State cabinet, which is scheduled to meet today (Feb 16), will discuss the issue threadbare besides also announcing that a special Investigation team (SIT) will be formed to investigate the allegations that have been levelled against the Congress leader and his wife Elizabeth who, even today, holds British citizenship despite entering into wedlock with Gaurav Gogoi 12 years ago.

Meanwhile, despite the Assam Chief Minister seeking a strong rebuttal on every question that came up as the issue snowballed into a major issue concerning even national security, Gaurav Gogoi has failed to reject the allegations while trying to brush the questions under the carpet.
