Ugratara Temple Theft | Four thieves, scrap dealer arrested

The crime branch of Assam Police has arrested the four thieves involved in the sensational idol theft at the Ugratara Temple early Friday morning. A woman scrap dealer who owns a scrap yard at Chabipool in Guwahati has also been arrested.

Crime branch sleuths arrested Rohit Basfor, Raju Basfor, Honey Singh and Babu for their involvement in the theft. Police also arrested a woman named Farhana, who owns a scrap dumping yard in Chabipool locality of Guwahati, for complicity in the crime. The four thieves had soled the idol, made from eight metals, to Farhana.

The idol, however, has not been recovered so far although crime branch sleuths are hopeful of recovering it very soon.

CCTV camera footage had captured the four thieves entering the temple early Friday around 3-3:30 am after breaking open the temple grill and whisking away with the idol, gold jewellery, the donation box and utensils.

The incident came to light when a priest came to open the grill that led to the inner sanctum sanctorum of the temple and found the idol and other things missing.

Police had earlier detained three persons for questioning but were later released after it became clear that they were not involved in the crime.
