Trouble brews in Punjab Congress as MLAs beeline at Navjot Singh Sidhu’s residence

GUWAHATI: The turmoil in Punjab Congress seems to have come out in the open. On Wednesday morning 62 MLAs reached newly-appointed Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu’s residence for breakfast as a show of strength and support.

The rift between Sidhu’s and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh seems to have widened with the CM’s media advisor asking public apology from Sidhu on twitter for derogatory social media posts against CM. Sidhu was appointed as the president of Punjab Congress on 18th July. There is an intense infighting in Punjab Congress as Sidhu had openly attacked Captain Amarinder Singh’s government.

On the other hand, the MLAs who are behind Sidhu retorted that the chief minister has been unsuccessful in many fronts and should apologise to the voters. Another MLA said that Congress will handsomely win the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly Elections under the leadership of Navjot Sidhu. They also accused that the incumbent chief minister’s advisers are misleading him and entry of Sidhu will increase the vote share of Congress in Punjab. MLAs agreed that more youth will be attracted to Congress in Punjab due to the appointment of Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Leaving BJP, Sidhu had joined Congress in 2017, just ahead of the Punjab Assembly polls.

The Punjab Legislative Assembly has 117 constituencies and will go to polls in February 2022.
