Tripura govt confers Bibhushan Award to Olympian Dipa Karmakar

Guwahati: On the occasion of statehood day the state government of Tripura has conferred the Tripura Bibhusan Award to Olympian Dipa Karmakar

The Tripura Government also awarded four other eminent personalities of the state with the Tripura Bibhusan Award. 

Taking to her Twitter Dipa wrote, “Thank you Government of Tripura for recognising my efforts and honouring me with the prestigious Tripura Bivushan Award in the first ever State Civil Award ceremony. অনেক ধন্যবাদ”

The event was attended by Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Dey and other dignitaries.  

CM Biplab Kumar Deb handed over a memento, cash prize and other gifts to artistic gymnast Dipa Karmakar.

A Padma Shri, Arjuna and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee, Dipa Karmakar was the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for an Olympics.

She went on to finish fourth at the 2016 Rio Games, narrowly missing an Olympic medal yet soared into the hearts of millions across the globe.

Dipa Karmakar’s fourth-place finish at the Rio Olympic Games was a defining moment for Indian sport, which had barely cast a glance at the sport of gymnastics as a medal discipline till then.
