GUWAHATI, Nov 6: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Government will neither cut any trees at Dighalipukhuri nor will it transplant them, which he said was the original plan, while announcing that one end of the proposed flyover from Noonmati to RBI will now end at Rabindra Bhavan before reaching Dighalipukhuri.
The other end running towards Noonmati will now begin from Lamb Road, Ambari, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said yesterday night after inspecting the proposed construction site at Guwahati Club following the clamour raised by a section of the people over the reported plan to fell the huge trees in front of Handique Girls’ College near Dighalipukhuri, which the Chief Minister outrightly dismissed.
“There was no plan to cut the trees in the first place. The plan was to relocate them to another place which would have given them more lifespan. I don’t know why the protests began in the first place. I am a man of words and since I had announced that an alternative plan would be worked out, so we have decided to shorten the length of the flyover,” Chief Minister Sarma said.
“While the end running towards Dighalipukhuri will now end near Rabindra Bhawan, the one that will run towards Noonmati will now take off from Lamb Road,” he added.

Chief Minister Sarma also dismissed reports raised by some sections of the people, including Prof Hiren Gohain, that the statue of Sahityarathi Lakhsminath Bezboruah would be brought down.
“The statue will remain as it is and it will remain under the flyover,” he said, adding that a vested interest circle is against the developmental projects launched by the government and are working to stall them.
“Some people protested genuinely since they were concerned about the reported move while another section had a hidden agenda of stalling developmental plans of the government; create a chaotic situation once the projects get halted leading to people not voting for the BJP in 2026,” Chief Minister Sarma said.
“Now that we will shorten the length of the flyover, we will complete it before the next assembly elections in 2026,” the Chief Minister concluded.
