Tragedy-hit Jorhat family: Wife passes away on same ICU bed four days after husband; son, daughter-in-law also infected

Guwahati: It’s by far the most tragic turn of events in Assam amid the coronavirus pandemic. A family in Jorhat has lost two members within the space of just four days.

What’s worse, the deceased couple’s son and daughter-in-law are also fighting the virus, that too in the same hospital where their parents/in-laws had breathed their last.

Eighty-five-year-old Dr SAW Hussain of Raja Maidam locality of Jorhat had to be rushed to Jorhat Medical College & Hospital on July 28 after he tested positive and his condition deteriorated. Although he was shifted to the ICU of the hospital, the octogenarian physician breathed his last around 9 pm the same night.

Numbed by the sudden turn of events, the distraught family was yet to come to terms with the tragedy when Dr Hussain’s wife – 73-year-old Aram Begum – also developed complications after testing COVID19 positive and had to be admitted to the same bed in the ICU of JMCH where her husband had lost the battle against the virus.

And today, four days later, she also breathed her last.

Their son, a prominent businessman, and daughter-in-law — a lecturer of JB College — are also undergoing treatment at JMCH after they too contracted the virus.

“It’s the worst tragedy that could have hit us. We have lost two members and their son and daughter-in-law are also in hospital fighting the virus,” a cousin of Dr Hussain told News Live, ruing the fact that none of them could even attend the funerals.
