Bangladesh cricket has found itself in a storm again. This time, it’s about young cricketer Towhid Hridoy, who has been handed a four-match suspension, and senior player Tamim Iqbal calling out the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for what he termed “laughable inconsistency”.
What Happened with Towhid Hridoy?
Towhid Hridoy, who is just 24 years old and leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in the ongoing Bashundhara Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPDCL), has been punished for showing dissent towards an umpire’s decision during a match against Gazi Group Cricketers.
The incident happened at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on 26 April 2025. Hridoy stood at the crease after being caught out, clearly unhappy with the umpire’s call. Umpires Moniruzzaman Tinku, Ali Arman Rajon, third umpire Muhammad Kamruzzaman, and fourth official ATM Ikram all reported him.
How Did it Escalate?
Earlier, Hridoy was handed a one-match suspension, but after players protested, it was deferred. However, things took a turn when he failed to appear for his disciplinary hearing, even after being informed about it.
As per the BCB’s statement, under Clause 5.2.6 of the Code of Conduct for the DPDCL 2024-25, Match Referee Akhtar Ahmad imposed a fine of Taka 10,000 and added one demerit point to Hridoy’s record. Since Hridoy already had seven demerit points from previous breaches, the latest point took his total to eight — automatically leading to a four-match suspension.
Tamim Iqbal Hits Out at BCB
Amid all this, former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal made strong comments against the BCB’s handling of the matter. Speaking outside the BCB office in Mirpur, Tamim slammed the board’s “laughable inconsistency.”
He questioned how a player could be suspended again after already serving the punishment. “He served his punishment, played two matches, and now suddenly he’s suspended again? Under what law is this being done? It’s laughable,” Tamim said.
He also criticised BCB for ignoring bigger issues like alleged match-fixing in the DPL and raised concerns about confidential matters being leaked to the media. Tamim’s comments have sparked a fresh debate about transparency and fairness in Bangladesh cricket.
What Happens Now?
Towhid Hridoy’s suspension is effective immediately, meaning he will miss the next four matches for Mohammedan Sporting Club. Fans and experts are waiting to see how BCB addresses the growing criticism and if any changes will be made to their disciplinary process.
For now, Hridoy has to sit out, and BCB has to answer some tough questions raised by one of Bangladesh’s most respected cricketers.
