GUWAHATI, Dec 2: Tourists have started making a beeline to North Sikkim after the area reopened for visitors yesterday (Dec 1).
The Sikkim Government had announced reopening of Mangan district for tourists after tourism activities were suspended earlier this year due to heavy rainfall that triggered landslides, causing significant damage to road infrastructure, including key stretches along the North Sikkim Highway.
Around 800 tourists, including visitors from Bangladeshi, visited Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley and Gurudongmar Lake in North Sikkim on the first day after reopening. The Toong Naga Road, which connects these famous tourist spots, reopened on Nov 29 after being closed for about 13 months.
The North District Tourist Permit Centre confirmed that 122 vehicles, including bikes, carried tourists to the scenic towns.
Visitors earlier used the Dzongu Road to reach these places but it has been closed since June 12, 2024.
The reopening of the road has brought hope to the local tourism industry, with hotels and tour operators expecting more visitors in the coming days.
