Curfew in Guwahati, Army carries out flag march; MHA reviews situation

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI, Dec 12: Indefinite curfew continues to remain clamped in Guwahati following the violence and arson that marred protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that was passed by Rajya Sabha yesterday.

The Army is carrying out flag marches in Guwahati with nearly 5,000 Army and para-military troopers deployed in Guwahati and other parts of the State.

Security in Guwahati has been beefed up to prevent miscreants from resorting to violence and to foil any attempts to disrupt peace.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry is reviewing the situation in Assam arising out of the violence amid reports of the government planning a massive shake-up in the top police administration.

Mobile internet services have been suspended for 24 hours from 7 pm yesterday in 10 districts to prevent rumour mongering.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has asked people to protest democratically against the citizenship bill and not to resort to any violence.

Rajya Sabha had passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 with 125 MPs voting in favour and 105 against it during voting in the upper house after a six-hour debate.

The bill was earlier passed by Lok Sabha on Monday.
