ULFA(I) linkman, two new recruits held at Namrup

GUWAHATI, Dec 29: In a major setback to the insurgent outfit ULFA(I), a linkman along with two new recruits of the proscribed organization were apprehended by a joint team of Dangri Kumar Army Camp, Sapekhati Army Camp and Namrup police on Saturday evening.

Based on specific inputs, a joint team of army and police launched an operation at Namrup under Dibrugarh district. The security forces apprehended an over ground worker identified as Rantu Sonowal alias Ran Asom who hails from Khowang. Rantu Sonowal was allegedly working for the banned outfit from a rented house at Namrup.

Following his confession, the two new recruits — Bidyut Charingia of Naharkatiya and Jishu Borah of Karbi Anglong — were apprehended.

A pistol with live ammunition, two ULFA(I) flags have been recovered from their possession.

According to the army sources, a group of 5-6 new recruits was planning to move towards Myanmar after getting together at Namrup and neighboring areas of Charaideo district. It also maintained that Rantu Sonowal played instrumental role in the recruitment drive of the outfit. He was also allegedly involved in a bid to hoist ULFA(I) flags on the protest day of the organization which was foiled by the security forces.
