Manipur NPP president Y Joykumar Singh termed the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 “one-sided”
BJP ally opposes Waqf Amendment Act 2025: The Manipur unit of the National People’s Party (NPP), which is an ally of the BJP in the State, has voiced its opposition to the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 with Y Joykumar Singh, president of Manipur NPP faction, calling the legislation “one-sided”, Northeast Live reported.
Speaking to the media in Imphal, Joykumar Singh also extended his support to party MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan, also the Manipur NPP working president, for challenging the constitutional validity of the Act in Supreme Court.
“We support our MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan in his fight for fairness and constitutional protection,” the Manipur NPP president was quoted as saying by Northeast Live.
Hassan, while announcing his move to challenge the Act in Supreme Court, had said that it violates Article 26 of the Constitution, and infringes upon the fundamental rights of minorities.
Meanwhile, thousands of Meitei Pangal (Manipur Muslim) men and women protested against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 as they took to the streets of Imphal East today (April 11).
Demonstrators formed human chains and shouted slogans against the Act, as they voiced their opposition to the legislation which had recently received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu after being cleared by both houses of Parliament after heated debates.
