GUWAHATI: Good news for those crossing Tezpur’s iconic landmark Mission Chariali. If things go according to plan Tezpur may soon have a flyover, thereby resolving the traffic congestion at the crossing.
Taking note of the traffic congestion at the Tezpur Mission Chariali crossing, Assam PWD Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that a new flyover can be built at the crossing.
Dr. Sarma along with Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das and Rangapara MLA Rajen Borthakur took stock of the situation at Mission Chariali along with officials on Sunday evening. The PWD minister has asked the accompanying officials for a study and an assessment of the land and other requirements and permissions for the construction of the flyover.
“Keeping the traffic congestion in mind at Mission Chariali we are having an initial discussion on a flyover. The completion of national highway will lessen the traffic load at Mission Chariali but keeping the future in mind we have taken an initiative. A consultant will be appointed in another 10 days and they will give us the drawings in two to three months. We will also discuss it with the army, and I think there won’t be any problem as the flyover will be below the height of the already existing buildings,” said Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Mission Chariali witnesses state traffic moving from all directions and merging at the point. This leads to a lot of traffic jams and snarls. Moreover, due to the army base nearby, there is a continuous movement of military vehicles as well.
A flyover at Mission Chariali will help passengers travelling from Mangaldai to Lakhimpur and From Nagaon to Mangaldai or towards Arunachal Pradesh.
