Guwahati: September 5 is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India. And on this special occasion  let us take some time to recognize the endeavours of teachers in  India who are working hard to adapt to digital education to impart knowledge to students amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fifth day of every September since 1962 has been celebrated as teachers day in India. Know about the day, the reason for it being celebrated and a lot more about the Indian teachers here.

In this current situation of COVID 19 pandemic, the educators have made a lot of efforts to keep the education system of the country intact.

With schools still shut due to the pandemic and classes being conducted in full swing on the digital medium, teachers, professors, tutors, have had to equip themselves with new skills in the realm of technology; an unchartered area of teaching that initially was exceptionally challenging for most of the senior staff.

In the lockdown months, they have evolved from having a working knowledge about using Zoom, WhatsApp video and other online apps and tools to deliver lessons over the Internet to students in the comfort of their homes.

Despite the hardships that have been weighing down on them, it is astonishing to see how some teachers are determined to fulfill their passion for teaching and imparting knowledge to all the students.

Today’s Google doodle is honouring the classroom heroes ‘who shape our future generations, even in the midst of the unprecedented COVID19 pandemic’. It has been developed by doodler Kevin Laughlin.

The birth anniversary of Dr S Radhakrishnan marks the day to celebrate teachers of India. He was one of the greatest teachers of his time.

Dr Radhakrishnan was the first Vice President of India and the second President of India. He served the office from 1962-1967. The story of the teacher’s day goes back to the time when he took his office as the President of India. Dr Radhakrishnan’s students took a special request to him. He wanted to make September 5th, a special day for him.

He instead, being the great man he was, said, “ I request you all to honour all the teachers of India on this day.” Since then the fifth day every September has been celebrated to honour the efforts of the teachers in our country.

Such was the popularity the second President of India that when he was leaving Mysore University to join the University of Calcutta, his students took him to the station in a carriage which had been decorated with flowers.

Today students send wishes to their mentors, through cards, gifts and programmes organized for their teachers. Every school is decorated be it in a village or a city. Students celebrate the day with great enthusiasm and vigour. It has been celebrated through generations and would be celebrated for many years to come.

APJ Abdul Kalam  once said, “If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher”  Wishing all the teachers of India a very happy teachers day from News Live.
