GUWAHATI, Dec 8: Scenes of jubilation in the streets of Damascus after rebel forces took control of the Syrian capital forcing President Bashar Al Asaad to flee the country to an unknown destination.
“We declare the city of Damascus free,” Sryian rebels stated as they strormed into the capital this morning.
The seize of Damascus and other important towns meant the end of rule of the Assads after over half a century.
“After 50 years of oppression under Baath rule, and 13 years of crimes and tyranny and (forced) displacement, we announce today the end of this dark period and the start of a new era for Syria,” the rebel Army said.
The rule of the Alawite dynasty over the predominantly Sunni nation began when Bashar Al Assad’s father Hafez al-Assad rose to power in a coup on November 13, 1970.
Meanwhile, the Hezbollah, which backed the Assad regime for years, has asked its forces to withdraw in the wake of the latest developments.
