While the S-400 air defence system — also called Sudarshan Chakra — foiled Pakistan’s drone and missile attacks, India neutralised the Chinese-developed HQ-9 missile defence system in Lahore
The Sudarshan Chakra of Indian Air Force — its S-400 air defence system — on Wednesday night and foiled an aerial attack by Pakistan in retaliation to the Operation Sindoor, reports have said.
“On the night of 07-08 May 2025, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj using drones and missiles. They were nutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks,” the Defence Ministry sttaed in a statement.
“Today morning Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. Indian response has been in the same domain with same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been nutralised,” the statement further read.
Meanwhile, reports said that Pakistan’s Air Defence Units of the HQ-9 air defence missile launchers have suffered heavy damage.
How the S-400 Countered Pakistan’s Drone Assault?
After India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Pakistan attempted to strike with drone and missile attacks targeting military installations in India which were neutralised by these advanced air defense systems.
During the Pakistani offensive, the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and air defence systems, anchored by the S-400, neutralised the incoming threats with higher effectiveness and precision.
Strategic Deployment and Capabilities
India has strategically deployed S-400 units along its borders with Pakistan and China, including in Punjab. The system’s range and mobility allow it to cover vast areas, providing a robust shield against aerial incursions.
The S-400 employs a layered defense approach with missiles capable of engaging targets at distances ranging from 40 km to 400 km. This versatility enables it to intercept various threats, from aircraft to ballistic missiles.
While specific operational details have been kept confidential, the S-400’s advanced capabilities and strategic deployment were largely instrumental in countering aerial threats, including drone assaults, by Pakistan.
