The protesters holding placards and banners started the rally from Dibrugarh University marching through the main roads of Dibrugarh town. As part of the protest, General Secretary of Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students’ Union (DUPGSU), Devid Hazarika along four other students of the University tonsured their heads.
“We are against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 because it is against the people of Assam. We strongly oppose the Bill as the BJP-led Central government is trying to provide citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis,” said Devid Hazarika, General Secretary of DUPGSU.
Further, the protestors also burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and copies of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. Meanwhile, the rally received huge support of the people of Dibrugarh on Tuesday. It should be noted that Sarbananda Sonowal had started his political journey from Dibrugarh University.
