A shocking incident has come to light from South Kolkata where a girl student of a reputed law college was allegedly gang-raped inside the campus itself. The crime reportedly took place on the evening of June 25, 2025, between 7:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. The case has left the city disturbed and once again raised serious questions about women’s safety in educational institutions.
According to the Kolkata Police, three individuals have been arrested so far. One of them, Manojit Mishra, aged 30, is a former student of the same law college, while the other two, Pramit Mukherjee (20) and Zaib Ahmed (19), are current students. The FIR was filed at Kasba Police Station after the survivor herself lodged a complaint.
Two of the accused—Mishra and Ahmed—were nabbed on the evening of June 26 from a park area near Talbagan crossing, while the third, Mukherjee, was caught later the same night from his home. Police officials have confirmed that all three accused will be produced in Alipore Court, and custody will be sought for further interrogation.
The survivor has undergone a medical examination at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. Officials also said the location where the incident occurred has been secured for a forensic probe. Witnesses have been questioned, and mobile phones of the accused have been seized for further investigation.
The incident has triggered fresh outrage across Kolkata, especially since it comes less than a year after a similar brutal case—the rape and murder of a medical trainee at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024. Repeated crimes like these are making citizens question the effectiveness of campus security measures and the commitment of institutions to protect their students.
Women rights groups and student organisations have started raising their voices. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, demanding a time-bound investigation and strict action.
While the investigation continues, the entire city is hoping for swift justice. Families are once again scared about sending their daughters to places that are supposed to be safe. A college campus turning into a crime scene is not only heartbreaking, but also unacceptable in today’s time.
This incident is not just about one girl or one college. It reflects the deep-rooted problems in our society where predators feel emboldened even within the premises of educational institutions. The people of Kolkata are demanding answers, justice, and above all—change.
