Stone quarry manager Apurba Kakoty released

PUBLISHED:

Apurba Kakoty, manager of a stone quarry located at Jagun in Tinsukia district who was allegedly abducted by suspected ULFA (I) militants on Nov 19, has reportedly been released. Although police are yet to confirm the developments, sources said family members were informed about his release at Lanka Basti along the Indo-Myanmar border.

Although the ULFA (I) did not claim to have abducted the stone quarry manager, Assam Police said the banned outfit was behind Apurba’s abduction along with the kidnapping of a tea garden manager at Borhat in Charaideo district of Assam.

The owner of the quarry along with Apurba’s family members also claimed that he was abducted by the outlawed ULFA (I). There is, however, no confirmation whether any ransom was paid to secure the release of the Apurba Kakoty.

Incidentally, Apurba’s mother is a cancer patient and the family was planning to bring her to Guwahati for better treatment when he was abducted by militants.

The abduction had led to sensation, particularly after five persons of a particular community were gunned down at Dhola in Tinsukia district.

Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia, on the other hand, claimed police and security forces have intensified operations against ULFA (I) in Tinsukia and other eastern Assam districts.
