The idol was kept hidden in a pond where it was dumped by a group of thieves who were apparently planning to sell it and hence had cut off parts of the centuries-old idol.

The recovery of the idol comes hours ahead of the Ugratara Tempe management’s move to install a new idol at the temple tomorrow (May 2).

The temple management has now decided to postpone the installation of the new idol.

The idol was stolen by four thieves who broke into the temple on the night of Nov 16 last year.

Although the four thieves involved with the main theft were arrested, the idol could not be recovered following which the temple management decided to install a new one.

Devotees have expressed happiness at the recovery of the stolen centuries-old idol.
