PUBLISHED:

Assam sprinter Hima Das scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a track gold in the IAAF U-20 World Championships at Tampere in Finland by winning the women’s 400 metres clocking 51.46 seconds. Hima was among the favourites to win the gold in the event, particularly after having the best timing in the heats and the semi-finals.

The quartermiler had taken 52.25 seconds to finish her run in the heats while bettering it to 52.10 seconds in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, congratulatory messages are already pouring in with President Ram Nath Kovind leading politicians and sportspersons in congratulating Hima on her stupendous performance.

Hima, now fondly called the Dhing Express since she hails from Dhing town in Nagaon district, has already qualified for the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia where she is expected to at least claim a podium finish, if not the gold.
