Asian Games: Six Indian Athletes including Hima & Shiva to vie for Gold today

A number of Indian athletes, including Sprinter Hima Das, will vie for Gold medals at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia today. 18-year old Hima, who recently became the first Indian to win a Track event Gold at the World Junior Championships, will run for the coveted yellow metal in the Women’s 400 meters final along with Nirmala Sheoran.

The Final of the Men’s 400 metres will feature Rajiv Arokia and Muhammad Anas. Dutee Chand will look to secure a place in the Women’s 100-metres Final when she runs in the semi-final round. Lakshmanan Govindan will be in action in the Men’s 10,000 metres Final, with Sreeshankar competing for the Men’s Long Jump Gold.

Meanwhile, Anu Raghavan and Jauna Murmu have qualified to the Final of the Women’s 400 metres Hurdles. In Archery, the Indian Men’s Compound team, comprising Abhishek Verma, Aman Saini and Rajat Chauhan, has entered the quarterfinals with a 227-213 win over Qatar. The Women’s team will face Indonesia later today for a place in the semi-finals.

In Table Tennis, the Women’s team has won its opening group match against Qatar, 3-0. The Men’s team will begin its campaign against UAE. In Badminton, Saina Nehwal advances to the quarter-final.

In Boxing, Shiva Thapa, Manoj Kumar and Sarjubala Devi will battle it out in their respective pre-quarterfinal bouts. In Hockey, India will meet South Korea in their fourth Pool-A match. India has won all of their previous three games.

India is currently 8th in the medals tally with 7 Gold, 5 Silver and 17 Bronze. China continues to maintain a substantial lead at the top with 72 Gold, 51 Silver and 30 Bronze. Japan is second, with South Korea third.
