Sonam-Raja Meghalaya Murder Case: Just hours before Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered, he was seen trekking peacefully with his wife Sonam in the beautiful hills of Meghalaya. A tourist named Dev Singh accidentally recorded a video on May 23 around 9:45 am, where Sonam was leading the way and Raja was calmly following her. No one knew this would be the last known video of Raja alive.
What makes this case so chilling is that the same day, just a few hours later, Raja was killed and thrown into a gorge near Weisawdong Waterfalls. The murder wasn’t just a random act—it was part of a shocking and well-planned conspiracy, allegedly plotted by Sonam and her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha. The murder was carried out by three young men — Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Chauhan — who were not professional killers, but friends of Raj.
According to the police, this was not a typical “murder for money”. Only ₹50,000 was given to these men for logistical help. In reality, it was a favour they did for their friend Raj, who had planned to remove Raja from the picture to be with Sonam. Raja and Sonam had just gotten married on May 11 and were on their honeymoon in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills.
That morning, Sonam and Raja checked out of their homestay and began their trek around 6 am. Raj’s men also checked out from a nearby place and began following them. A guide later told police he had seen the couple along with three other men. Sonam was also seen wearing a white t-shirt, which police later found near the crime spot.
By 2 pm, as per police findings, the group reached a remote area near Weisawdong Falls. That’s where the three men attacked Raja with a machete while Sonam stood by. His body was thrown into the gorge. After the murder, Sonam helped the killers hide blood-stained clothes, even giving her raincoat to one of them. They then escaped on scooters and abandoned the vehicle later.
Sonam didn’t return home. Instead, she ran away in a burqa. Her escape was full of tricks and long-distance travel — from Shillong to Guwahati, then to Siliguri, Bihar, and finally Indore. At one point, she even pretended to be a kidnapping victim. But her game didn’t last long.
Meghalaya police worked quietly and smartly. They had already reached Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, tracking the accused. When one of the killers, Akash, was arrested, Raj panicked and told Sonam to act as if she had escaped from kidnappers. On June 7, Sonam was found unconscious at a dhaba in Ghazipur. She was taken to a hospital, where she later surrendered to the police.
Meanwhile, Raja’s body had already been found on June 2, turning a missing case into a murder investigation. Police now believe the original plan even included a backup idea — to kill a random woman, burn her body, and pretend it was Sonam’s so she could escape more easily. This disturbing plan had started months ago, even before the wedding.
Police say they have enough evidence and are now working to reconstruct the crime scene and file the charges soon. All five accused — Sonam, Raj, Vishal, Akash, and Anand — are in police custody for eight days as the investigation continues.
This case has shocked people across the country. A young couple, a dream honeymoon, and a love triangle with betrayal and cold-blooded murder — all unfolding in one of India’s most scenic tourist spots. As the investigation moves forward, the truth behind this tragic story is slowly being revealed.
