GUWAHATI, Nov 19: If the pain and grief of losing his son and grandson was not enough, a person from Gohpur had to pay Rs 25,000 for ambulance and, more shockingly, post-mortem “fees” that was paid to a doctor and sweeper of a government hospital in Behali for the inquest.
Sidananda Saikia of Solengiguri in Gohpur — whose son Mriganka Saikia allegedly killed his minor son on Nov 7 before reportedly hanging himself (Mriganka’s body was found hanging the next day) — alleged that he had to pay Rs 25,000 to get the post-mortem of his son and grandson done at Behali Block Primary Health Centre.
“I had not spoken about this earlier but I felt that people should know since I could pay but somebody else facing a similar fate like me might not be financially sound to pay a similar sum,” Sidananda Saikia told News Live.
“The bodies of my son and grandson were at the police station when a relative came to me saying the two ambulances are charging Rs 7,000 each to take the bodies to Behali for the post-mortem while the doctor would take Rs 3,000 for each inquest amounting to Rs 6000 while a sweeper was demanding Rs 2,000 each. I paid him Rs 25,000 and told him to get the post-mortem done,” he alleged.
“I had lost everything following the tragedy that hit me and my family. But I wondered why should a person pay anything to get a post-mortem done at a government hospital,” he further said.
