GUWAHATI: Senior BJP leader and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan on Wednesday called Congress MLA Sherman Ali mentally retarded for his recent comment on setting up a Miya Museum at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati. Sherman Ali also stated that the museum should showcase traditional Bangladeshi Lungi and Saree in the museum.
Prasanta Phukan asked Assam Congress president Ripun Bora to control Sherman Ali from making such derogatory statements which could lead to tension in the society.
“Those people came from Bangladesh. They have no stand. They haven’t adopted any culture in Assam,” said MLA Prasanta Phukan.
BJP leader Prasanta Phukan added, “Is it possible to keep lungi and saree in a museum? I request Ripun Bora to restrain Sherman Ali from making communal statements. In the future, these things will create turmoil in Assam. They are trying to lit a fire in the social fabric of Assam. This has to stop as people in Assam are unhappy and will not stay silent.”
