Assam Police have registered a suo moto case against educationist and intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain, KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi and journalist and activist Manjit Mahanta, slapping sedition charges against them for reportedly supporting Assam’s independence.

Latasil Police registered a suo moto complaint (case no. 1 5/2019 under sections 120(B)/121/123/124(A) of IPC) against Dr Gohain, Akhil and Manjit Mahanta after they were accused of supporting independence for Assam during their respective speeches made during the demonstration against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, on Monday (Jan 7).
“They had made some comments that need to be looked at. We, therefore, have registered a case and are looking into the incident,” Guwahati Comissioner of Police Deepak Kumar said.

He said investigations are on but refused to comment when asked if police were planning to arrest them.
