GUWAHATI: Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the schools in the state would open from September 21.

Talking to media persons in Guwahati, Dr. Sarma said that students of class 9, 10, 11 and 12 can attend the schools from 21 September with permission from their guardians. The minister also said that fifty percent of the teachers will attend the schools for now.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the government will ensure the sanitisation part and the students will have to bring their own masks.

Meanwhile, students and guardians have welcomed the state government’s decision to open the schools.

“I study in class 12. Schools should reopen as soon as possible. There are many issues including network problem for online classes,” said Amit Krishna Bora, a student from upper Assam’s Sivasagar.

“We can’t clear all the doubts through online classes. So physical classes are necessary,” said Miti Ranjan Gogoi, a class 11 student.

On the other hand, many parents have urged the authorities to take all the precautions for COVID-19.

“We too want schools to reopen. But all the COVID-19 protocols should be maintained. Authorities should take steps to sanitise the schools buses,” said a parent.

“Opening schools is really necessary. At the same time, we should raise awareness about COVID-19 among the students,” said another guardian.
