Guwahati, Dec 18: The Supreme Court Wednesday issued notices to the Central government asking it to respond to the batch of petitions challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The apex court will next hear the petitions on January 22 once it opens after the winter vacations.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students’ Union, one of the petitioners in the case, said it is hopeful of getting the Act repealed.

Speaking to media persons in Guwahati, Chief Adviser of AASU Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya welcomed the apex court’s decision to examine the constitutional validity of the amended Citizenship Act.

Meanwhile, AASU President Dipanka Kumar Nath expected a positive outcome after today’s hearing in the Supreme Court.

“The agitation on the streets will go on simultaneously against the act,” Nath added.

On the other hand, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, General Secretary of the students’ body, also expressed hope that the top court would repeal the act.
