SC extends NRC deadline by a month, quashes re-verification plea

PUBLISHED:

The Supreme Court Tuesday (July 23) extended the deadline for publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) final list by a month to Aug 31, 2019 while, at the same time, rejecting the Centre and the Assam Government’s plea for sample re-verification. A two-judge bench of the apex court comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman extended the deadline taking into account the situation arising out of the devastating floods in the State.

The court that heard the matter at 3 pm today, however, rejected the pleas of the Central and the State governments for 20% re-verification of names in districts bordering Bangladesh and 10% names in other districts of the State.

Incidentally, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for both the Central and the State governments had during the last hearing on July 19 pleaded for re-verification of samples.

“Please extend the deadline for publication of final Assam NRC from July 31 to a future date. There is a growing perception that many exclusions and many more inclusions have been made wrongly,” Mehta had said, and added: “India cannot be the refugee capital of the world.”
