GUWAHATI, Nov 24: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the victory in the by-elections in Samuguri, where BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah humbled Rakibul Hussain’s son Tanzil – the Congress candidate – by 24,501 votes, is a testament to the people’s faith in the BJP’s development-centric policies and reflects rejection of divisive and appeasement politics.

Diplu Ranjan Sarmah’s resounding victory, in a seat with 65% minority population and held by the Congress for more than two decades, shows that the people have embraced the BJP, Chief Minister Sarma said.

“Samaguri, held by Congress for over two decades, has now embraced the BJP. This victory reflects the rejection of divisive and appeasement politics,” he said.

Sarma, while talking to his Facebook page, said the people of Assam have given us a 100% premium by helping the BJP win the Samaguri assembly constituency.

“Winning Samaguri was not easy, especially with Pradyut Bordoloi, the Congress MP from Nagaon, backing the party. The people of Samaguri have spoken decisively, rejecting Congress’s policies of appeasement in favour of inclusive justice,” he stated.

The ruling BJP-led alliance had swept the by-elections winning all five seats with the BJP winning Samaguri, Behali and Dholai while alliance partners AGP and UPPL bagged Bongaigaon and Sidli seats respectively.

The Congress drew a blank although it had contested all five seats.
