Rohit slams maiden Test double ton, India in driver’s seat in Ranchi Test

PUBLISHED:

Rohit Sharma slammed his maiden Test double century as India, already 2-0 ahead in the three-Test series, were perfectly in command of the third Test at Ranchi although bad light stopped play on the second day as well. The visitors were reeling at 9/2 at Stumps on Day Two after the hosts, riding on Rohit’s batting blitzkrieg and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane’s first Test century at home since 2016, declared at 497/9 at Tea.

The star of the day was the Indian opener who notched up his maiden double century in Tests. His double ton came after his hundreds in both innings in the first Test at Visakhapatnam and the third by an Indian batsman in the series. He was finally out for 212 after surpassing 500 runs in the current series.

Rahane also notched up his century before falling for 115. Jadeja too continued his good form with the bat as he brought up his 13th Test half-century while Umesh Yadav slammed 31 off 10 in a late flourish to take the hosts to 497/9 when skipper Kohli declared.

The reply from the Proteas couldn’t have been worse as they stared down the barrel yet again after losing two quick wickets as Elgar and de Kock departed for a duck and 1 run respectively.
