GUWAHATI, Jan 20: A CBI court in Kolkata today awarded life imprisonment to Sanjay Roy, convicted of raping and murdering a 31-year-old intern doctor inside the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata city.
The Sealdah court issued the life sentence stating that it was not the “rarest of rare crimes” although the CBI had demanded that Roy be given death penalty.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on Roy.
The court further ordered the State Government to pay the family of the deceased doctor a compensation of Rs 17 lakh which the family has rejected.
“We don’t want compensation, we want justice,” ANI quoted the victim’s family members as saying.
