In a brazen display and abuse of power, activists of the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal attacked NEDA convener and Assam Finance, Health and PWD minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh’s convoy at Khejuri in Kanthi LS constituency of the State today (May 7). The attack, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, took place before West Bengal Police who stood “like mute spectator”.

“We are at Khejuri in Kanthi LS constituency and attacked mercilessly by Trinamool Congress goons. Many of our workers are injured even as Mamata Banerjee goons gheraoing and abusing us. West Bengal BJP President Dilip Ghosh and I are stuck,” Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.

“While reinforcement from CRPF has arrived, the violent TMC goons are not allowing the forces to rescue us. TMC cadres shouting and abusing everyone. Scene here is scary!” another tweet read.

“TMC goons have blocked the roads on both sides, even as West Bengal Police personnel standing like mute spectator. I am appalled at such brazen abuse of power by Mamata Banerjee whose people have thrown all democratic norms to gutter. Is this the #NewIndia that we dream of?” Sarma further tweeted.

Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that “TMC goons” also damaged more than 20 motorcycles. Three BJP workers were also taken by the irate TMC activists, he further stated, adding that they were later escorted out of the area by CRPF personnel.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has condemned the attack on the BJP convoy.

“We strongly condemn these kinds of cowardly attacks. People will punish this goondaism,” CM Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted.

The attack took place when the BJP leaders were campaigning for the sixth phase of elections.
