In a massive development, Khairul Islam, declared a foreigner by Morigaon Foreigners’ Tribunal and the order upheld by Gauhati High Court, was arrested by Morigaon Police Wednesday night, a day after News Live broke the news of the High Court rejecting his petition challenging the order.
Although Gauhati High Court had dismissed Khairul’s petition challenging the Morigaon Foreigners’ Tribunal’s order on June 13, 2018, the district administration and police were unaware of the court order and hence no action was taken against him.
And it was only after News Live broke the news about Gauhati High Court rejecting Islam’s challenge and upholding the order of the Foreigners’ Tribunal that police came to know about the developments and finally took him into custody.

Incidentally, Khairul — a school teacher working at Thengsali Khanda Pukhuri LP School in Morigaon district — was involved in the NRC update process despite being declared a foreigner by Foreigners’ Tribunal. He was also able to get his name in the NRC draft that was published on July 30.
Apart from Khairul Islam, the Gauhati High Court has also upheld the Morigaon Foreigners’ Tribunal’s order that declared his mother, three brothers and a sister foreigners.
News Live was the first to break the story of Khairul Islam’s involvement in the process of updating the citizen’s register. He had even confessed to him being declared a foreigner by the Morigaon Foreigners’ Tribunal.
It was only after the News Live expose that the district administration axed him from the NRC work force.
