Lower Subansiri project: Plan to resume construction work triggers protests

PUBLISHED:

A day after News Live reported that the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation or the NHPC is getting ready to resume construction work of the 2000-mega watt Lower Subansiri Hydro Power Project at Gerukamukh, groups and organizations opposing the project have once again hit the streets.

The Asom Jatiyatibadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) carried out protests at Khelmati in Lakhimpur district as activists staged a road blockade besides warning the NHPC and the central government and asking them to refrain from resuming construction work.

Protesting AJYCP activists also burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Power minister RK Singh.

Construction work at the Lower Subansiri Hydro Power Project at Gerukamukh has been stalled since December 201 following protests and demonstrations by several groups and organizations opposing the big-dam project. Organizations opposing the project have allayed fears that the dam, once commissioned, will have adverse impact on people living in downstream areas.
