Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das, two youths from Guwahati, were mercilessly beaten up by a murderous mob at Panjuri village under Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong district on June 8. Abhijeet, hailing from Panjabari, and Nilotpal — a musician by profession who hailed from Silpukhuri and had come to Guwahati from Goa where he was working — died on the spot.

The due were lynched after Alfajoz Timung, the prime accused, after picking up a quarrel with the duo, spread romours of them being childlifters.

The incident led to shock and dismay not just in Assam but across the globe that followed a police crackdown leading to the arrest of the 47 accused. The trial was later shifted to Nagaon after the families of Abhijeet and Nilotpal felt it could be influenced if the trial was held in Karbi Anglong.
