After Assam, JPC holds public hearing in Shillong

After holding public hearings in Assam, at Guwahati and then at Silchar in Barak Valley, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, held its third leg of public hearing in Shillong today.

Several groups, organizations and individuals submitted their representations during the JPC hearing in Shillong. The NPP-led coalition government in Meghalaya had earlier stated that it would oppose the bill.

While majority organizations and individuals had opposed the bill at the public hearing held in Guwahati, it was the opposite in Silchar where organizations and individuals supported it during the two-day hearing that ended yesterday.

Meanwhile, North East Students’ Organization (NESO) president Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyaa once again opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, at the JPC hearing in Shillong and said that the Northeast cannot become a dumping ground for Bangladeshi migrants.

“We cannot accept the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. Our stand is clear. We cannot accept any more Bangladeshi migrants. The Northeast cannot become a dumping ground for Bangladeshi migrants,” the NESO president told News Live in Shillong.

Meanwhile, a number of organizations held protests in Shillong opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
