A real-life Bunty-Babli duo who fled a boutique in Guwahati with three mekhela sador sets has been hed by Latasil Police after the boutique owner — popular theatre and TV actress Chandana Sharma — lodged a complaint of theft against the duo.
The arrested couple, identified as Anjali Gowala of Guwahati’s Gandhi Basti locality and Samrat Pathak of Hajo, were held after an FIR was registered at Latasil Police Station.
They were both employed at a hotel in Guwahati.
“The incident took place last Sunday when the youth came to my boutique at around 5:45 in the evening and inquired about mekhela sadors. He then went out saying his girlfriend would come and check the available collections,” Chandana Sharma told News Live.
“After about 2 minutes, a girl entered our boutique and asked whether she could see the collections we had. She was wearing a helmet but did not remove it even when she was inside the shop. She selected two mekhela sadors, one she said she would buy for her and the other for her mother. She then said she would buy another one — a total of three sets — but said her UPI account was not working and that she would get it from her boyfriend. Saying this she went out with the three mekhela sador sets. Once she was outside, she went to their two-wheeler and fled,” the actor-turned-entrepreneur added.
We were shocked at what had happened and approached the police, lodging a complaint at Latasil Police Station.
Meanwhile, the accused duo, who were on the run, were apprehended and brought to the police station.
While the girl said she was innocent and accused her boyfriend of framing her, the youth said he was under some mental stress and did not know what he was doing.
“Both of them had planned everything. They are very cunning and are giving contradictory and misleading statements to the police,” Chandana Sharma said when asked about what she knew about the ‘Bunty-Babli’ duo.
Police have recovered the three mekhela sador sets from the duo and are investigating if they had committed similar thefts in the past as well.
